Is latex clothing sustainable? Is a question I get asked a lot, because how could it be?
In today’s age most women are wearing polyester underwear, polyester being a plastic and known carcinogen, what we wear matters so let’s get into latex and why we use it.
When you think of stretchy, high-shine, or body-sculpting fabrics, your mind probably jumps straight to synthetic plastics: polyester, spandex, vinyl, or neoprene. But there is a sustainable exception hiding in plain sight… 100% natural latex.
Natural latex isn't made in a petroleum refinery. It begins as a milky sap harvested directly from living trees. Latex fabric breaks the mold of fast fashion and offers a genuinely renewable, biodegradable alternative.
At Alexander Night we source 100% natural medical grade latex as sustainability is only half the journey when choosing fabrics that are touching your skin, it also matters how they affect it, as an example recycled polyester does just as much harm as non-recycled.
We craft our garments exclusively using medical-grade natural latex, manufactured under the strict ISO/EN 13485:2003 standard for Class 1 medical devices. Unlike cheap industrial rubber that relies on harsh chemical additives and heavy fillers, medical-grade latex undergoes an extensive purification process.
This strips away residual plant proteins to dramatically reduce allergy risks while ensuring complete biocompatibility, zero toxic residue, and maximum skin safety for close-fitting wear.

1. It’s Harvested, Not Harmful (Trees Stay Intact)
Natural latex comes from Hevea brasiliensis, commonly known as the rubber tree. Harvesting latex doesn't require cutting down trees. Instead, local farmers make precise, shallow incisions in the bark a process called tapping to collect the liquid sap.
2. 100% Biodegradable at the End of Its Life
Synthetics like polyester or polyurethane take hundreds of years to break down in landfills, fragmenting into hazardous microplastics along the way.
Natural latex is organic matter. Under normal composting or natural soil conditions, microorganisms, moisture, and UV light naturally break it down. Depending on the thickness and environment, pure natural latex degrades at a rate similar to a fallen oak leaf returning its biological elements back to the earth.
If you want to delve a little deeper natural rubber latex is composed of polyisoprene. Soil bacteria and fungi, specifically enzymes like latex clearing protein (lcp) produced by Actinobacteria, naturally cleave these bonds to break down the material into organic matter.
The "Oak Leaf" Comparison: Industry degradation studies (frequently cited by organisations like the Environmental Protection Agency and international balloon/rubber trade associations) demonstrate that under natural environmental conditions (sunlight, moisture, and soil microbes), pure natural latex breaks down at roughly the same rate as a fallen oak leaf (ranging from 6 months to a few years depending on thickness and climate).
3. Zero Shedding of Microplastics
Every time synthetic garments are worn or washed, millions of microscopic plastic fibers wash into oceans and waterways. Because natural latex is a plant-based polymer rather than a fossil-fuel product, it never sheds microplastics.
