At Alexander Night, we believe that the journey into rope work begins with how you treat your cordage.

Because our high-grade jute shibari rope is completely JBO-free (Jute Batching Oil-free) and processed with skin-safe vegetable oil, there is no need for messy water-boiling or washing steps. Following the dry-conditioning technique, you can take your raw jute straight to a silky, supple finish using heat, friction, beeswax, and jojoba oil.

Rope Butter

Before starting, you’ll need to mix a batch of solid "rope butter." Following a ratio of 75g pure beeswax to 175g cold-pressed jojoba oil (roughly a 30:70 ratio by weight).

  1. Melt the beeswax and jojoba oil together over a gentle water bath or double boiler.
  2. Stir thoroughly, pour into a sealable glass jar, and let it cool completely into a firm, creamy butter.
  3. Dosage: You will only need about 3g of butter (a hazelnut-sized portion) per 8-meter length of rope.

What You’ll Need

  • Alexander Night JBO-Free Jute Shibari Rope
  • Prepared Rope Butter (beeswax + jojoba oil blend)
  • Pure Jojoba Oil (for the final wipe)
  • Cotton Mesh Laundry Bag
  • Tumble Dryer
  • Gas Burner/Torch (producing a clean blue flame)
  • Microfiber or Linen Cloth

Step-by-Step Conditioning Method

Step 1: Apply the Rope Butter & Heat-Infuse

  1. Take a hazelnut-sized portion of your prepared rope butter, rub it evenly between your warm palms, and coat the entire length of each rope.
  2. Put the lightly buttered ropes back into the cotton mesh laundry bag. (Using the laundry bag is essential, it traps the heat and butter within the fibers rather than letting it escape down the dryer exhaust).
  3. Tumble dry for 30 minutes. The heat forces the beeswax and jojoba deep into the core of the jute filaments.

Step 2: Untangle & Singe

  1. Carefully untangle the ropes once they come out of the warm dryer. You will immediately notice how pliable and soft they feel compared to raw spool cordage.
  2. Pass each meter of rope back and forth 2 to 3 times through a clean blue gas flame. Move swiftly to singe off loose micro-fuzz without scorching the structural core strands. Be careful as fuzz can ignite.

Step 3: The Jojoba Wipe & Rest

  1. Drizzle a small amount of pure jojoba oil onto a linen or microfiber cloth.
  2. Firmly pull each rope through the cloth (once in each direction) to clean away soot from the singeing process and apply a light protective coat.
  3. Air Out: Roll the ropes loosely into a basket or hang them over a rail for 24 to 48 hours to let the oils settle and rest.

Ongoing Care & Maintenance

Jute is a natural, living fiber that gets better with every session.

  • Re-conditioning: Whenever your Alexander Night ropes start to feel dry or "hairier" after months of use, simply repeat the blue-flame singe and wipe them down with your jojoba-dampened cloth.
  • Storage: Store loose in a breathable cotton bag away from direct sunlight, excess heat, or humidity.

When prepared using this time-honored dry method, your Alexander Night jute rope achieves a luxurious, silky drape that glides smoothly across the skin while maintaining the precise bite needed for safe, stable bondage.
